Margit the Fell Omen is the first major skill check in Elden Ring. He guards the entrance to Stormveil Castle, and most new players hit a wall here. The key is knowing which attacks to punish and which to avoid.

Recommended Preparation

RequirementWhy
Level 25+Vigor 20+ lets you survive his combos
Weapon +3 or higherLess than +3 and your damage tickles him
Spirit Ashes (Lone Wolf)Distraction while you heal and attack from behind
Margit's ShackleBuy from Patches or find in Murkwater Cave — stuns Margit twice in Phase 1

Attack Patterns

AttackPhaseCounter
Walking Staff Combo1Block or dodge through, punish after the third swing
Jumping Slam1Roll to the side (not backward)
Dagger Charge1Margit rushes with a magic dagger — roll left
Staff SpinBothBack up — the spin has massive reach
Hammer Summon (Phase 2)2He summons a magic hammer — roll INTO the swing
Holy Sword Combo (Phase 2)2He creates a holy sword and does 4 swings — dodge each one, punish the last

Strategy

1

Phase 1 — Use Margit's Shackle

Use Margit's Shackle at the start. It stuns him for 3 seconds — hit him 3-4 times. The Shackle works twice per fight. Save the second use for when you need breathing room.

2

Play Defensively

Margit delays his swings to catch panic rollers. Watch his hand — the weapon comes down when his hand reaches the bottom, not on visual wind-up. Roll on the hand-drop timing, not the weapon's peak.

3

Phase 2 — New Moves, Same Punishes

At 50% HP, Margit adds the hammer and holy sword. Keep close — his ranged attacks are deadlier than his melee. When he summons the hammer, roll INTO the swing for a free hit afterward.

Pro Tip: Summon Sorceress Sellen (if you started as a mage) or the Noble Sorcerer spirit ash. Ranged summons distract Margit while you heal, and they survive longer than melee summons.
Don't: Don't try to trade hits with Margit. He has poise advantage and will win every trade. Hit once or twice, then back off.
