About Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight is a critically acclaimed Metroidvania action-adventure game developed by Team Cherry, set in the hauntingly beautiful ruined kingdom of Hallownest — a vast underground world filled with forgotten cities, ancient temples, fungal swamps, and the restless spirits of bugs. You play as the silent knight, exploring interconnected biomes, unlocking new abilities, and facing over 40 unique boss encounters that range from straightforward tests of skill to brutally difficult endurance battles. The game's hand-drawn art style, atmospheric soundtrack, and deep lore have made it a modern classic and a benchmark for the Metroidvania genre.

Hollow Knight bosses are known for their punishing difficulty and distinctive attack patterns. Early bosses like the False Knight test your fundamentals, while mid-game fights likeHornet and Nosk demand precise movement and pattern recognition. The endgame and DLC content push players to their limits — Nightmare King Grimm from the Grimm Troupe DLC is widely considered one of the hardest boss fights in gaming history, requiring frame-perfect dodges and split-second decision-making. Even the Hollow Knight final boss tests everything you've learned. Our Hollow Knight boss guides provide charm recommendations, attack pattern breakdowns, phase strategies, and tips to help you conquer every foe in Hallownest — from the Forgotten Crossroads all the way to the Godhome.

Hollow Knight FAQs

How to beat False Knight in Hollow Knight?

The False Knight is the first major boss in Hollow Knight, found in the Forgotten Crossroads. He has three phases with the same attack patterns: hammer slam (creates a shockwave — jump over it), charge (dash away or jump over him), and falling debris (dodge the falling rocks). The key is to hit his head after he staggers — when he falls over, his armor cracks and you can deal massive damage with your nail. Use Vengeful Spirit (the spell you get in the Ancestral Mound) for extra damage. In his final phase, he goes berserk — stay patient and wait for openings after his slam attacks. Recommended charms: Soul Catcher and Stalwart Shell.

How to beat Hornet in Hollow Knight?

Hornet is fought twice — first in Greenpath (mid-game) and later in Kingdom's Edge (late-game). In the Greenpath fight, Hornet uses a needle throw (dash to dodge), lunge attack (jump over and hit her from above), and AoE thread spin (back away). The best strategy is to stay aggressive — hit her once or twice after she misses an attack, then back off. Don't let her heal (she pulls back a thread to heal — hit her to interrupt). Use Quick Focus and Longnail charms for better reach. For the Kingdom's Edge rematch, she's faster and has a new air attack — use Sharp Shadow to dash through her attacks and Mark of Pride for extended range.

How to beat Nosk in Hollow Knight?

Nosk is a terrifying boss hidden in Deepnest — it mimics your appearance and lures you into its lair. The fight takes place on a long, narrow platform with two levels. Nosk has two main attacks: charge across the platform (jump over it) and acid spray from above (dodge to the opposite side of the arena). In Phase 2, Nosk adds a rain of acid blobs from the ceiling — stay mobile and watch the shadows on the ground. Use Shaman Stone and Spell Twister to spam Vengeful Spirit/Shade Soul for safe damage. Quick Focus is also recommended since healing windows are tight. Avoid using Dash Slash as the end lag can get you hit.

How to beat Nightmare King Grimm?

Nightmare King Grimm (NKG) is the superboss of the Grimm Troupe DLC and one of the hardest fights in all of Hollow Knight. Every attack is fast and punishing: fire bats (dash through the low bat, jump the high bats), dash uppercut (dash away, then dodge the falling fire), flame pillars (walk in one direction to avoid them), and spikes from ground (stand on the safe platforms he creates). The key is rhythm and patience — only attack after his dash uppercut (one hit) or after spike ground attack (heal once or hit 2-3 times). Recommended charms: Unbreakable Strength, Sharp Shadow, Dashmaster, and Quick Focus. See our full NKG guide for detailed phase breakdown.

How to beat the Hollow Knight (final boss)?

The Hollow Knight is the main final boss, found in the Temple of the Black Egg at the top of Hallownest. He has two phases: Phase 1 uses triple slash (dash through or parry), ground pound (jump over the shockwave), and scream attack (back away). Phase 2 activates at about 50% HP — he stabs himself and becomes more erratic, spewing infection blobs and using a tendril attack from the ground. The best strategy uses Fragile/Unbreakable Strength and Mark of Pride for safe range. Stay patient, only hit once or twice per opening, and use Descending Dark for i-frames during his scream attacks. If you have the Dream Nail, use it on his body after staggering him for extra Soul.
