Hollow Knight

Beginner Progression Route: Where to Go in the Early Game

EasyTime 15–20 min readUpdated

Hollow Knight is deliberately quiet about where to go next. That freedom is a big part of its appeal, but the first few hours can feel like a maze of locked gates, high ledges, acid pools, and suspicious floors. This route gives you a dependable path from Dirtmouth to the point where Hallownest opens up. It is not a speedrun and it does not require difficult skips. Instead, it puts the most useful movement abilities and upgrades in an order that keeps backtracking manageable.

Treat this as a compass rather than a checklist. Side rooms, rescued Grubs, charms, and bits of story are worth the detour. If you enjoy exploring an area, stay there. When you stop making progress, return to the route and use your newest ability on an obstacle you passed earlier. For more boss-specific help, the Hollow Knight guide hub collects BeatGuide's current walkthroughs.

The short version: Forgotten Crossroads → Greenpath → Fungal Wastes → City of Tears → Crystal Peak → Resting Grounds → Royal Waterways or Ancient Basin. Your key pickups are Vengeful Spirit → Mothwing Cloak → Mantis Claw → Nail upgrade → Desolate Dive → Crystal Heart → Dream Nail → Monarch Wings.

Before You Leave Dirtmouth

Drop down the well and explore the Forgotten Crossroads until you meet Cornifer, the humming mapmaker. Buy his map. When you return to Dirtmouth, buy the Quill from Iselda so benches can fill in the rooms you have visited. New players should also use Wayward Compass; spending one charm notch to see your location is far better than losing ten minutes to a wrong turn. You can remove it later when the layout feels familiar.

Activate every Stag Station you find. Stagways are the game's fast-travel network, and opening a station is almost always a better use of Geo than buying a charm you may not equip. Sit at benches often: resting saves your progress, updates your map, refills health, and changes your respawn point. It also respawns ordinary enemies, so think before sitting if you just cleared a difficult corridor.

Some of these can be collected in a different order. For example, you can reach Crystal Peak with the Lumafly Lantern before obtaining Desolate Dive. The order above is comfortable because it turns each major obstacle into an obvious clue and avoids asking a first-time player to cross dark rooms early.

Step-by-Step Early-Game Route

1. Forgotten Crossroads: False Knight and Vengeful Spirit

From the central Crossroads shaft, work west and then north toward the large armored boss marked on Cornifer's map. Defeat the False Knight to receive the City Crest. The fight rewards patience: jump over shockwaves, hit the exposed head when the armor collapses, and heal during the long stagger. If you want attack-by-attack help, use our False Knight guide.

Afterward, visit the Ancestral Mound and speak with the Snail Shaman. He gives you Vengeful Spirit, a forward-firing spell. Complete his short trial and use the spell on the Elder Baldur blocking the route west. Spells consume Soul, which you earn by striking enemies. Vengeful Spirit deals excellent early damage, so do not save every drop of Soul for healing.

2. Greenpath: Find Hornet and Earn the Dash

Pass the defeated Elder Baldur and enter Greenpath. Buy Cornifer's map, open the Stag Station, and follow Hornet's red cloak generally west and then down. Environmental hazards become more important here: cut hanging platforms when needed, watch for plants that fire explosive seeds, and do not chase Geo into acid.

Hornet is the first real speed check. Keep enough space to read her needle throw, jump over her ground lunge, and step away from the thread storm. Take one or two hits at a time rather than trading damage. Winning grants the Mothwing Cloak. Dash beneath low hazards, across modest gaps, and out of attack arcs. Before leaving, test it on routes that were just out of reach; Greenpath contains several useful rewards, but you do not need to clear every corner now.

3. Fungal Wastes: Get the Mantis Claw, Skip the Lords for Now

Travel toward the southeast of Greenpath or pass through the lower Crossroads to reach Fungal Wastes. Bouncing on purple mushrooms is a common early roadblock: hold down in the air and strike them with your Nail to pogo upward. The same downward strike works on enemies, spikes, and some projectiles.

Continue down to Mantis Village and find the Mantis Claw. It lets you cling to walls and jump away from them, effectively opening the middle of the game. The Mantis Lords wait below the village, but they are optional for this route. Challenge them if you enjoy learning a demanding pattern fight; otherwise, leave with the Claw and return after upgrading your Nail. You do not need their victory reward to enter the City of Tears.

4. City of Tears: Upgrade the Nail and Explore Soul Sanctum

From Mantis Village, climb back into the Wastes and head east. Use wall jumps through the long platforming room, then place the City Crest in the statue beside the great gate. Once the gate closes behind you, keep moving until you reach shelter and a bench; you are not permanently trapped.

Find the Nailsmith in the city's lower-left section. Your first upgrade costs 250 Geo and no Pale Ore, making it one of the best early purchases in the game. It improves every basic strike and shortens future fights. You can sell Wanderer's Journals, Hallownest Seals, and other relics to Relic Seeker Lemm without losing quest progress. Relics survive death, so sell only what you need instead of carrying the proceeds through dangerous rooms.

Next, climb to Soul Sanctum and defeat Soul Master for Desolate Dive. His fake-out slam catches new players: wait until he commits before dashing, and use the long pause after his rotating-orb attack to heal. Desolate Dive damages enemies, grants a brief window of invulnerability, and breaks floors that shake or crack when you walk over them.

5. Crystal Peak and Resting Grounds: Super Dash, Then Dream Nail

Return to the Forgotten Crossroads and use Desolate Dive on the trembling floor near the eastern side to enter Crystal Peak. An alternate entrance requires the Lumafly Lantern and a toll, but the dive route is cheaper. Crystal Peak asks for precise conveyor-belt and laser timing. Watch one full hazard cycle before moving, and use wall cling to pause rather than making every jump immediately.

The main prize is Crystal Heart, often called Super Dash. Hold the ability while against a wall or standing on level ground, aim horizontally, then release to fly until you hit an obstacle or cancel. After collecting it, use the long route on Crystal Peak's lower-right side and drop into the Resting Grounds. The story sequence there gives you the Dream Nail. Activate the nearby Stag Station before leaving.

The Dream Nail reads thoughts and gathers Essence from Whispering Roots and dream encounters. It can also draw Soul from many stationary or staggered targets. You do not need to grind all available Essence now. The important change is that the game has introduced its larger objective and given you several possible directions.

6. Choose Royal Waterways or Ancient Basin

At this point the route branches. For stronger movement, descend from the City of Tears toward Ancient Basin, defeat Broken Vessel, and collect Monarch Wings. The double jump makes exploration much more forgiving. Broken Vessel can be hectic, but clearing the orange infection balloons quickly keeps the arena under control.

Alternatively, spend a Simple Key on the hatch below the City to enter Royal Waterways. Defeat Dung Defender, then use Crystal Heart to reach Isma's Grove and collect Isma's Tear. Acid immunity opens shortcuts and optional zones across Hallownest. Either branch is valid. If one boss feels unreasonable, take the other route, find charms and Mask Shards, then come back stronger.

Smart Early Purchases and Charm Setup

Spend Geo on permanent convenience first: maps, Quill, Stag Stations, the first Nail upgrade, and the Lumafly Lantern. The Lantern costs a lot, but it turns several dark routes from guesswork into normal exploration. Simple Keys are also valuable; just remember they open different doors, so using one is a choice, not a mistake.

A practical beginner charm setup is Wayward Compass plus whichever combat charm fits your habits. Soul Catcher supports more healing and spells, Longnail makes basic attacks safer, and Shaman Stone makes Vengeful Spirit much stronger. Fragile charms are powerful but break when you die outside dreams; if repeated deaths are likely, leave them with Leg Eater until you are comfortable. There is no single required build.

Common Roadblocks and How to Fix Them

  • “I cannot cross a gap.” Mark it mentally and return after Dash, Mantis Claw, Crystal Heart, or Monarch Wings. Most impossible jumps are ability gates, not execution tests.
  • “The room is completely dark.” Buy the Lumafly Lantern from Sly in Dirtmouth. If Sly is missing, rescue him from the hut in the lower-right Forgotten Crossroads.
  • “A floor shakes under my feet.” Come back with Desolate Dive from Soul Master. Stand over the weak section and cast downward.
  • “A black barrier blocks the path.” That is a later-game Shade Gate. Neither normal Dash nor Super Dash passes it, so choose another route for now.
  • “Acid blocks everything.” Short acid pools may have a path above them; large acid routes usually require Isma's Tear.
  • “I died and lost all my Geo.” Defeat your Shade before dying again. Move slowly on the return trip, and hit the Shade with Vengeful Spirit if it floats somewhere awkward.
  • “I am trapped in the City of Tears.” You are not. Find the bench, Nailsmith, and Stag Station, then explore upward. Several exits become available as you move through the city.
  • “A boss kills me in seconds.” Spend one attempt only dodging. Once you know which attacks leave a safe opening, add a single hit. Hollow Knight usually punishes the extra swing, not the first one.

How to Explore Without Feeling Lost

When you enter an area, your first priorities are Cornifer, a bench, and the Stag Station. Listen for Cornifer's humming and look for his paper trail. After buying the map, explore one branch at a time instead of zigzagging across the whole zone. If a path ends at a clear ability gate, turn around; that dead end is useful information.

Use map pins for doors you cannot open and bosses you intend to revisit. Keep at least one or two routes unexplored in each region, because a new ability often makes one of them viable. Most importantly, do not confuse optional difficulty with required progression. The Mantis Lords, Brooding Mawlek, and many other early fights can wait. Hollow Knight rewards curiosity, but it rarely demands that you defeat the hardest thing currently available.

Beginner Route FAQ

What is the best early-game route in Hollow Knight?

A reliable first-playthrough route is Dirtmouth, Forgotten Crossroads, False Knight, Ancestral Mound, Greenpath, Fungal Wastes, Mantis Village, City of Tears, Crystal Peak, Resting Grounds, then Royal Waterways or Ancient Basin. This order collects Vengeful Spirit, Mothwing Cloak, Mantis Claw, the first Nail upgrade, Crystal Heart, and Dream Nail without requiring advanced skips.

Which abilities should I get first in Hollow Knight?

For a normal beginner route, get Vengeful Spirit first, then Mothwing Cloak, Mantis Claw, Desolate Dive, Crystal Heart, Dream Nail, and Monarch Wings. Isma's Tear is a useful follow-up. The route opens gradually, so do not worry if you see ledges, acid, or dark rooms you cannot cross yet.

Do I need to beat the Mantis Lords to reach the City of Tears?

No. Collect the Mantis Claw in Mantis Village, then leave and use the City Crest at the large gate on the east side of Fungal Wastes. The Mantis Lords are optional at this point and are much friendlier after one or two Nail upgrades.

What should I spend Geo on first?

Prioritize area maps, the Quill, Wayward Compass if you need it, Stag Station tolls, Lumafly Lantern, and Nail upgrades. Avoid carrying a large pile of Geo into an unfamiliar boss room. Relics such as Wanderer's Journals can be saved and sold in the City of Tears when you need safe money.

Where should I go after getting the Mantis Claw?

The clearest next destination is the City of Tears. Climb out of Mantis Village, head east through Fungal Wastes, cross the platforming section with the wall jump, and use the City Crest at the gate. Find the Nailsmith and upgrade your Nail before taking on harder optional areas.

How do I recover lost Geo after dying?

Return to the spot where you died and defeat your Shade. Hitting it restores your Geo and repairs your Soul meter. If the Shade is in a dangerous place, take a Rancid Egg to Confessor Jiji in the locked cave at the far right of Dirtmouth; a Simple Key is needed to open her door once.
