False Knight
False Knight is the first major boss in Hollow Knight. He guards the entrance to the City of Tears. He's big, loud, and intimidating — but his attack patterns are simple once you understand them. He's designed to teach you the game's core combat rhythm.
Attack Patterns
| Attack | Tell | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Massive Slam | Rears up and slams his club down | Dash backward, then hit his body 1-2 times |
| Horizontal Swing | Winds his club to the side | Jump OVER the swing, land behind him, hit twice |
| Charge Attack | Rushes across the arena | Jump over him or dash through — he stops at the wall |
| Shockwave (Phase 1) | After slam, shockwave travels along ground | Jump over the shockwave |
| Falling Debris (Phase 2) | Roars and rocks fall from ceiling | Watch the shadows on the ground — dodge where they land |
Strategy
Phase 1 — Learn the Rhythm
False Knight cycles through his attacks in a predictable pattern. After every attack he staggers — that's your damage window. Hit him 1-2 times, then back off and wait for the next attack. Don't get greedy.
Phase 2 — Enrage (60% HP)
At 60% HP, False Knight roars and debris falls from the ceiling. This is his enrage phase. The debris has shadow indicators — move away from them. He's slightly faster but still follows the same attack pattern.
Phase 3 — Stagger & Finish (30% HP)
At 30% HP, False Knight slams harder — each slam sends TWO shockwaves. Jump over both. He also charges more frequently. Stay patient — you're close to winning.
The Dream Nail Secret
After beating False Knight, his armor collapses and you can see the real bug inside — a maggot controlling the armor. Before leaving the arena:
- Walk up to the collapsed armor
- Use the Dream Nail (if you have it) on the maggot — you get 100+ Dream Essence
- Hit the maggot with your nail to finish it
If you skip this, you can come back later with the Dream Nail. Make sure to check this room after acquiring it.
